Edward Lear and Franklin Lushington produced Gorge of Taygetum near Sparta On 24 March 1849, Lear providing the initial outline and Lushington working it up in pen and watercolour. It possibly shows the Caeadas chasm of the Taygetus mountains into which the Spartans threw criminals.
