Brian Alderson has remarked;
The oval plate is, as you suspected, almost certainly one of the Jeux D'Esprit that Ted concocted with John Verney, as noted in the bibliography at c.32. i was misled into thinking it part of the Chelsea Set because Christianna has it on her dresser along with the six properly fired plates, but an oval dish was never thrown. For heaven's sake don't wash it since i think it is original ink work (copying the 'boating' plate) so may wash away to nothing!"
