This painting of Lucerne, shows the buildings on the northern bank of the River Reuss. The tower is part of the town hall or Rathaus built in the Italian Renaissance style in the early 17th century. Goodwin painted this view from the covered Chapel Bridge, a distinctive feature of Lucerne, that he painted many times.
