During his lifetime, Mervyn Peake was best known for his novels about Titus Groan, the ‘Gormenghast’ trilogy, and his illustrations of Treasure Island, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and other classics. After his death, his widow published a collection of nonsense poems which became one of the best-loved volumes of modern nonsense, taking its place alongside those of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll. Published to mark the centenary of Peake's birth in 1911, Complete Nonsense includes over ninety poems, together with ‘The Adventures of Footfruit’, a narrative in poetic prose.
