Maurice Sendak (1928-2012)

Maurice Sendak was an American author and children’s book illustrator. He was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, and for most of his life lived in New York and Connecticut. He was inspired to draw after watching Disney’s Fantasia as a young boy.

His seminal book
Where the Wild Things Are is one of the most well-known works of children’s literature and illustration to this day. First published in 1963, it has since been adapted into film, television and even opera. The mischievous main character Max, in his wolf suit, has become an iconic image of the wild and adventurous young child.
The book has won numerous awards, and in 2020 it was reported that the book was number four on the list of ‘Top Check Outs of All Time’ by the New York Public Library.

Maurice Sendak died in 2012 following a stroke, and his artwork became the collection of the Maurice Sendak Foundation. Since 2018, near 10,000 pieces of his original work have been stored and managed by the University of Connecticut.
