David Langdon, OBE FRSA FSIA (1914-2011)

David Langdon was born in London on 24 February 1914 and was educated at Davenant Grammar School, London and the London School of Economics. Working first in the Architects’ Department of the London County Council, he produced his first Punch cartoon in 1937 and was a regular contributor for over fifty years; he was elected to the Punch table in 1958. During the Second World War, he was an Executive Officer in the London Rescue Service (1939-41) and was a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force (1941-6), editing the Royal Air Force Journal (1945-6). In the same period he published Home Front Lines (1941), the first of many comic books. He has been a cartoonist for the Sunday Mirror (since 1948) and for the New Yorker (since 1952), and has also produced a substantial amount of advertising work. He used ink with a brush rather than a pen for his black and white cartoons, while working at his caricatures in line and gouache. He was awarded the OBE in 1988.
