Bryan De Grineau (1883-1957)
Bryan De Grineau, who first published under the name of John Bryan, was born on 11 May 1803. An adjutant with the 41st Brigade of the RFA during the First World War, he sent back vivid sketches from the front line for The Illustrated London News and The Illustrated War News, and stayed abroad for some years after 1911 while recovering from shell shock.
Later studying art in Paris and New York, he returned to England to specialise as an illustrator of motor racing and aviation. He contributed to The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News for many years and to The Illustrated London News until his illness in 1956. He died in the following May.
