The eighth of eleven children of George Howard and his wife, Rosalind, Lady Cecilia Howard (1868-1947) was aged 17 at the time that she sat for the present portrait. She inherited her parents’ passion for the Liberal Party and her father’s talent for art (the latter being suggested by the drawing board that she holds in her hand).
