An obituary in The Illustrated London News (august 1879) stated that, though Charles Landseer ‘would not, like Sir Edwin, make dogs and deer more living in characteristic expression than the real animals, it is thought he could do horses nearly as well as Sir Edwin’. However, the present watercolour and an oil of bloodhounds and pups (exhibited at the RA in 1839; Tate) both attest to his skilful depiction of canine subjects. It is therefore strange that the dogs in his Eve of the Battle of Edgehill, 1642 (oil on canvas, exhibited at the RA in 1845) should have been painted by his brother Edwin, and sad that a dealer should have cut these out and had the portions repainted before selling the work to the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
