Windsor Castle became one of James Baker Pyne’s favourite motifs, and was the focus of Windsor, with its Surrounding Scenery, the first of his series of volumes of lithographed illustrations, which was published in 1839. The artist considered the royal residence from many angles and at many times of day, including the present view, looking in a southeastwardly direction early in the morning. The buildings that stand out on the horizon include the State Apartments, the Round Tower and St George’s Chapel.
