St-Just-en-Bas
The village of St-Just-en-Bas, in Central France, lies between Clermont-Ferrand and Lyon, quite close to the upper reaches of the River Loire. At its highest point stands the late fifteenth-century church of St Just, the tower of which provides the focus of the present watercolour by Ernest Greenwood. Around it cluster houses and trees in a strongly constructed yet gently articulated composition, suggestive of a synthesis of the work of Paul Cézanne and Samuel Palmer.
