David Wynne was fascinated by Guy, the famous male western lowland gorilla who lived at London Zoo from 1947, (he arrived at the zoo on Guy Fawkes night, hence his name) to his death in 1978. During the late 1950s Wynne regularly visited Guy bringing him food and studying him. He made these models of him in 1960 and 1961. The marble sculpture of Guy, commissioned by the Arts Council of Great Britain, was unveiled in Crystal Palace Park in London.
