"In his working methods Brill demonstrated great consistency, patience and control. Self-critical and modest, despite his nonchalant and sometimes arrogant air, it seems that Brill himself, although holding the practice of drawing to be of great importance and constantly pushing himself (and his students) in its improvement, did not really value his own efforts as a draughtsman at their true worth. There is no doubt, however, that he was a great craftsman when working with pen and pencil.'
