The initial version of the ‘Entertainment’, façade, comprises the recitation of poems written by Edith Sitwell to a score by William Walton. It proved a succès de scandale when sitwell herself performed it at the Aeolian hall, in London, on 12 June 1923. Three years later, Walton published two orchestral suites for full orchestra.

in 1929, Günter Hess used the first of those suites to create a ballet of façade for the Deutsche Kammertanztheater. Then, in 1931, Frederick Ashton used an expanded version of that suite to create a ballet for the Camargo Society. The first production premiered at the cambridge theatre, on 26 april 1931, with designs by john armstrong. It is the Ashton-Armstrong version that is performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet. The debutante and the dago perform the pas de deux, ‘Tango Pasodoble’.
