Taken from a sketchbook of John Tenniel’s cartoons and illustrations, this is the preliminary drawing for an illustration that appeared in the Punch Almanack for 1887, the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The illustration is a humorous imagining of a design for a wall-painting at the Imperial Institute, which would be established in 1888 to hold the property and assets held by the crown from the contributions given by private citizens from across the Empire. The collection was conceived by the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VII), and the Imperial Institute building was opened by Queen Victoria in 1893.
