"Everyone was talking about Mr Bates vs The Post Office. I didn't draw Alan Bates. He'd been at the forefront of the sub-postmasters' campaign but he wasn't a 'face' as such. So I decided to draw Toby Jones, who played him in the show. Bates was talked about as if the sky were the limit to what he could achieve: he could get a knighthood, become prime minister of a saint. He has since been knighted but he hasn't done the other two things - yet." - Peter Brookes
