Thomas Rowlandson produced many drawings featuring ‘eating houses’ and ‘chop houses’, characterised by the high backed wooden booths and large clock. The likelihood that the present drawing is a coffee house is due not only to the lack of food on the tables, but also because the men present are still wearing their hats. In eating and chop houses, the diners’ hats were removed.
