Peronne is a small town close to where the Battles of the Somme took place during the First World War. This picture shows an angle of the ruined main square during the German occupation of the town between 1914 and 1917. The town hall bears a sign reading ‘Nicht argern nur wundern!’ which translates as ‘Don’t be angry only marvel!’ The town was liberated by Australian troops in 1918, and today the sign is in the collection of the History Museum in Peronne.
