Diary, 1913, November 3rd, Cambridge.

'Glad to be back here and with a St. Martin's summer. The sight of the "backs" has been one to rejoice over: never have I seen colour more resplendent. Two days spent in trying to get some of it have been spent in comfort instead of purgatory! for midges – if the weather is mild enough – make the doing of these subjects torture, otherwise the nip of the early frost, made sitting out of doors (for old bones) a precarious kind of matter; but midges this time have, I suppose, gone to an early grave, for they are not! To me a midge is worse than twenty mosquitoes!'
