Eric Holt enjoyed depicting figures in action, including figures at play. The present work shows a batsman at a village cricket match about to be caught out, and typifies the artist’s approach, with the solid bodies of its protagonists filling, and almost breaking, the picture plane, in order to engage the viewer’s attention.
