Benôit-Constant Coquelin (1841-1909) was one of the most famous actors of the period, a member of the Comédie-Française and toured throughout Europe.
Thermidor, set during the French Revolution, was first staged at the Comédie-Française on January 24 1891 and starred Coqueline in the leading role. The play is named after the eleventh month in the French Republican calendar and Auguste Escoffier's famous 'Lobster Thermidor' was named after the play.
