It is only the tower that remains of St Augustine, Watling Street in the City of London. First recorded in the 12th century it was razed to the ground by the Great Fire of London in 1666 and rebuilt to Sir Christopher Wren's plans in 1683 with the steeple designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor's and completed in 1695. In 1941 the church was completely destroyed during the Blitz and only the tower was restored in 1954. The tower was later incorporated into the buildings of St Paul's Cathedral Choir School in 1962-67 when it was stipulated that the new school buildings could not be taller than the cornice of the tower they enveloped.
