Edward Arthur Heffer’s view of Kingston-upon-Thames depicts the traditional Market Place in 1879 which was used as a meeting point for the people of Kingston since 1170. On the left is the Griffin Hotel, a coaching inn that today has been transformed into a distinctive shopping arcade, the Griffin Centre. It now has Grade II listed status.
At the forefront is the Coronation Stone, which is believed to have been the site of the coronation of seven Anglo-Saxon Kings. The ancient Sarsen stone block is the same stone used in the building of Stonehenge. The stone was moved from the Market Place to the Guildhall in Kingston in 1935.
