The club-houses of the United Service Club and the Athenaeum in Waterloo Place, stand upon the site formerly occupied by Carlton House and its grounds, with Lower Regent Street to the north and the Duke of York Steps leading down to the Mall to the south. Renowned architect John Nash designed the two club buildings to flank the entrance to Waterloo Place, and the United Service Club (for senior members of the armed forces) moved into 116 Pall Mall in 1828. Called ‘The Senior’, it was the most prestigious military club in London and by 1910 it had expanded into both 118 and 119 Pall Mall. However, by the late 1970s it suffered financial difficulties and closed in 1978. The building was bought by the Institute of Directors with a condition of the sale being, that it would retain all the club’s original fixtures, which it still does today.
