The Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore was built in 432 by order of Pope Sixtus III. It is the largest of all the 80 churches dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is one of the seven Pilgrim churches in Rome.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was erected on the Esquiline hill where the Virgin Mary appeared in a dream of Pope Liberius and also where snow appeared in the middle of summer, on 5 August. This day is annually commemorated with white flower petals which are dropped from the ceiling.
