In 1872, William Simpson visited China for The Illustrated London News to cover the marriage of the Emperor Tongzhi to the Empress xiaozheyi.
On Saturday 18 July 1874, William Simpson exhibited a collection of his drawings of China, Japan, the Modoc War in the United States and Sedan War at a costume ball held by the Prince and Princess of Wales at Marlborough House. The display was in honour of the visiting Crown Prince and Princess of Germany.
