This watercolour refers to one of the major and brutal battles fought in Ypres, West Flanders in 1914 during the First World War. ‘Wipers’ was the Tommy slang for the French city which was catastophically damaged, the building behind the British soldier is the medieval Cloth Hall. This, the original watercolour, was reproduced as a contemporary print.
