As an Official War Artist, Hennell was deployed for three month attachments. From June-September 1944 he was in Normandy on the beaches immediately after the allied landings and in the villages between there and Caen. From September-December 1944 he was with the First Canadian Army, as they cleared the German-occupied Channel coast to the east of the Normandy landings, from Rouen to Dunkirk.
