'The Battle of the Falaise Pocket, which took place from 12 to 21 August 1944, brought the Battle of Normandy to an end when an estimated 100,000 German soldiers were encircled by American, British, Canadian and Polish troops in the Dives valley. Hennell made several paintings and drawings of some of the 50,000 Germans who were taken prisoner and witnessed the Falaise battlefields in the aftermath of the fighting where between 10,000 and 15,000 German troops were killed.'
