On 11 June 1944 Thomas Hennell (and Edward Ardizzone) left Portsmouth for Normandy to record the allied positions, arriving only five days after the D-Day landings. Ver-sur-Mer, a village on the Normandy coast, is situated at the eastern end of Gold Beach and was therefore in the midst of the D-Day landings. It is 12 miles north-west of Caen. Hennell then moved inland and recorded allied activity at Bénouville and Ranville and then ultimately, at the relief of Caen.
