Bernay is a small town between Caen and Rouen. It is likely this drawing was completed in early September as from September 1944, ‘Hennell was now attached to the First Canadian Army, which was tasked with clearing the German-occupied Channel coast following the Allied victory in Normandy. Hennell accompanied the Canadians on their north-easterly advance from Falaise, as they captured the ports of Dieppe, Le Havre, Boulogne and Calais throughout September 1944.’
