By November 1944 Hennell was attached to Naval Party 1747 who carried out bomb disposal in Belgium and Holland. Hennell himself, had been appointed a temporary lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in May 1944, and being in uniform helped him gain access to areas only reserved for military personnel.
