Helen Violet Asquith (1887-1969) was the daughter of H H Asquith, Prime Minister from 1908 to 1916, and known as Lady Violet from 1925 following her father’s elevation to the peerage as Earl of Oxford and Asquith.
She became active in politics herself from the 1920s, serving as President of the women’s Liberal Federation from 1923-1925 and again from 1939-1945. She also became the first woman to serve as President of the Liberal Party from 1945 to 1947. Known as a prolific diarist, her diaries covered her father’s premiership during and after the First World War until the 1960s, a
period in which she was one of the closest friends of Sir Winston Churchill.
In 1915, she married the Liberal politician Sir Maurice Bonham Carter. Her grandchildren include the actress Helena Bonham Carter.
