EC Bentley
A close friend of Chesterton from schooldays, Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875- 1956) is best remembered as the inventor of the
'clerihew', a short four-line verse form, usually comic in content, which rivals the limerick in popularity; a number of his finest clerihews were published in Biography for Beginners. A journalist by profession, he also wrote the famous detective story, Trent's Last Case (1913). He was father to the illustrator Nicholas Bentley (1907-78).
