Arthur John Strutt (1819-1888)


Arthur John Strutt was born in in Essex, England in 1819. His father Jacob George Strutt was a notable landscape painter and his mother Elizabeth was a writer. In his youth Arthur John Strutt travelled widely across Italy, France and Switzerland, often with his father, before settling in Rome. In 1841 he travelled from Rome to Palermo on foot, walking across central and southern Italy and Sicily. As a result of these travels, Arthur John Strutt produced work of the Campagna Romana and established himself as one of the great artists working across the Italian countryside.
