George Denholm Armour, OBE (1864-1949)

G D Armour was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland on 30 January 1864 and was educated at St Andrews University. He studied at Edinburgh School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy (1880-1888), and from 1890 worked in London as a painter and illustrator. Four years later, he made his name with his first appearance in Punch, and from that time he was closely associated with images of country pursuits. During the First World War, he commanded the depot of the Army Remount Service and served in Salonica, in 1917 and 1919, being awarded an OBE in that latter year.
