Antonio Senape (1788-1853)

Antonio Senape, is considered one of the most prolific vedutisto, an artist specialising in highly detailed landscapes of cities and iconic vistas, in Italy in the first half of the nineteenth century. Very little of Senape was known until recently, but his meticulously annotated drawings and his travel albums have indicated that he was born in Rome in 1788 and moved to Naples between 1815-1818, where he lived in Chiaia, the waterfront district of Naples and considered himself a landscapist, restorer and teacher of pen and ink drawing. His drawings of popular sites in Florence, Rome, Milan or Naples are not just distinguished by fine linear architectural detail but also by the animated figures that poplate the scenes. it is these chattering fishermen, leaping dogs and even a boisterous fight between peasant women [see Chiagia La Mergellina] that bring his scenes to life and become historical annotations to a unique period of travel and exploration.
