Edgar Edwin Lawrence Pattison was born in Bloomsbury, London in 1872. He studied at Lambeth School of Art.
From 1890, he worked as a freelance decorative artist. He designed textiles and interior furnishings, as well as wallpaper. These were produced by leading British manufacturers such as Essex & Co and Jeffrey & Co, and sold by Liberty’s in London.
He was both a painter and etcher, with a special interest in colour printmaking. Many of his works featured scenes of the Middle East as well as his native London.
From 1909, he began to regularly exhibit artwork at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibitions, and in 1916 his wallpaper design was shown in the RA Arts & Crafts Society Exhibition.
He was a Member of the Society of Graphic Artists from its inception in 1919. He exhibited works widely until 1935, at venues including the Walker Gallery in Liverpool and the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts.
For the majority of his life, he lived in west London. He died in 1950, and his work is represented in the collections of the Hammersmith and Fulham Archives and Local History Centre. Collections of his prints are also held by the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
