According to an advertisement in The South India Teacher in 1942, ‘The Everest Readers’ were published in India by Blackie & Son as a ‘new Modern and Carefully Graded Series of Readers for Indian Schools’ and ‘Fully Illustrated in Colour and Black and White’. The illustrations by Charles Tunnicliffe that are represented here suggest that the readers comprised a combination of English and Indian poetry and prose. These included poems by Tennyson (‘The Eagle’) and Sarojini Naidu (‘Spring’), and stories from the ancient Sanskrit collection (‘The Crows and the Serpent’).
