'The Minster dominates all in this view of York from the roof of the Mansion House. Everyone's idea of a mediaeval city, full of narrow streets, houses and shops punctuated here and there by the towers and spires of secondary churches, while below, lots of little people, hurrying about their business, and above and beyond grand and beautiful, broods an enormous Minster. I have drawn it four times, between 1942 and 1981 – but each one has been done from slightly different points of view.'
