Ed McLachlan, one of the greatest of post-war cartoonists, has died on 29th September at the age of 84 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife Shirley and beloved children; Danielle, Joelle, Alex and Aimee; and grandchildren Asia, Sophie, Matilda and Lukas. Surrounded by family he was said to be as lucid and funny to the end. Indeed recent cartoons posted on the website and published in Private Eye, The Oldie and Spectator show him to be still uniquely inspired a humorist with cartoons that are as edgy, outrageous and hilarious as ever. Ed’s vigorous line and irreverent humour have never wavered, from his first cartoon in Punch in 1961 until now, with his relentless attacks in devastatingly bad taste on every target from the woke brigade to tattooed youths.
We were privileged to be his exclusive dealers over the years and will now be celebrating his visual legacy in a Memoriam chapter and display in our annual Illustrators exhibition starting November 26th. In December we will still stage our annual show of Ed McLachlan. It will, of course, be titled 'CLASSIC ED'.
