The view is from An Corran on northern Skye looking west towards the Quiraing and the sheer inland cliff, Leac nan Fionn.
The sloop, Sampson, built in 1834 and on route to nearby Stenscholl with a cargo of stones and timber, was shipwrecked in Staffin Bay on 3 October 1867. It. was reported that the remains of her timbers landed on the shore, as Gordon-Cumming has depicted the following year.
This painting has been the cause of much research and scholarly red herrings. Initially, because of several reasons including that the only likely wreck of a vessel named Sampson in the 1860s was in Hong Kong waters, we believed it was painted during Constance Gordon-Cumming's travels in Asia. However, with the help of an interested client (DL), we have now definitively identified the location of this beautiful and haunting landscape to the other side of the globe, from China to Skye. We are always pleased when clients contribute to our research and expand our areas of knowledge which are then available to everyone.
