After first visiting London in the autumn of 1904, Edmund Dulac settled properly in the city in August of the following year, in Holland Park. Shortly thereafter, he joined the London Sketch Club, a private members club founded in 1898 by a group of artists including Dudley Hardy, Cecil Aldin, Phil May, Tom Browne and John Hassall. The Club would meet each week for a session drawing from memory, followed by drinks and dinner. It is likely that this drawing was created during one such meeting.
