'Cromek would have made this watercolour from studies in Siena Cathedral when he was there in 1838. This watercolour is a remarkable example of Cromek’s skill as an architectural draughtsman, combined with his strong sense of composition, to create an elevating effect.
Journal: July 20th 1838
"We left Florence and went to Siena for 2 months.
I made four very careful studies in the Cathedral, which is painted beautifully inside and out. The Pulpit by Nicolo Pisano is exquisite. The pavement is made from the designs of Beccafumi and are remarkably fine."'
