This probably dates from Cecil Hunt's first trip to Sicily in 1920. This painting shows the coast between Trapani and Palermo on Sicily's north coast and echoes a preliminary work in his sketchbook [2b]. In both sketchbooks 2a [large format] and 2b [medium format] Hunt made a visual record of his journey, following the coast eastwards from Trapani along the fertile Conca d’Oro (golden crescent) to Palermo and Monreale. From there Hunt continued east towards Cefalù, finishing at Taormina on the coast overlooking mainland Italy. This was the first of many visits that Hunt and his wife, Phyllis, would take to Sicily, always staying at the Casa Cuseni, the villa in Taormina belonging to his friend and art critic, R H Kitson.
