'Every house and cottage had a dog on the watch that afternoon who dashed out at the car. The children were of course ready for them and hung out of the windows yelling, "We're going to Bantry," and as usual the system worked.
Alex had not handed out regular pocket money while they had been at Reenmore, partly because he was not sure how far the money would go and partly because there was nothing much to spend it on. But now they were going home he felt safe to give each of them ten shillings.
"As we've got to waste an afternoon in Bantry we might as well buy some presents. I want to get some new fishing hooks for Eamon-the-fish."
"And we must get something nice for Mrs. O'Brien," said Penny.
"And something for Daddy and Mummy," Robin reminded them.'
