Located near Totnes, in Devon, Dartington Hall was built in the late fourteenth century by John Holland, 1st Duke of Exeter and half-brother of King Richard II. In 1559, Dartington was acquired by Sir Arthur Champernowne, Vice-Admiral of the West under Elizabeth I. The Hall was home to the family for 366 years until the mostly derelict building was sold in 1925. In the past century it has undergone extensive renovations and was between 1932 and 1987 used as a school.
