Sweet Bird of Youth by Tennessee Williams opened on 10 March 1959 at the Martin Beck Theatre in New York. It centres on the disintegrating relationship between the gigolo, Chance Wayne (Paul Newman), and the alcoholic film star, Alexandra Del Lago (Geraldine Page). Though Chance plans to blackmail Del Lago with a secret tape recording in order to get a part in a film, his concentration is diverted by the presence of Heavenly Finley, the only daughter of a powerful and wealthy businessman and politician.
