The present cartoon by Sir David Low represents the contrasting opinions on Sir Winston Churchill in the aftermath of the Second World War.

As Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill was credited with leading Britain and the Allies to victory over Nazi Germany, thus securing his legacy as one of the great wartime leaders of the twentieth century.

However, in the UK General Election held in July 1945, shortly after the War in Europe had ended, Churchill's Conservative Party was decisively defeated by Clement Attlee's Labour Party, resulting in Churchill losing the Premiership.

Though Churchill's role as a brilliant wartime Prime Minister and status as a national hero was undoubted, a British public fatigued by the austerity of War wanted social reform and security, rather than a return to prewar Conservatism. Labour's focus on welfare, housing, national health and employment matched the mood of the country, whilst Churchill's campaign was seen as out of touch and overly focused on wartime leadership.
