Doreen Wallace (1897-1989) was born in Cumbria and moved to Suffolk in 1922 after her marriage to Rowland Rash. She was a novelist, poet, teacher and social campaigner, and part of the Somerville Group of Novelists, whose authors included, Vera Britain and Winifred Holtby. The Faithful Compass was first published by Collins in 1937.
